Hutch Kerns

Hutch Kerns is the founder of Kerns Landscape Architecture and has been practicing landscape architecture and land planning for 22 years, 18 of those years in Asheville and Western North Carolina. His experience includes large-scale planning and amenity design, urban design, master planning, mixed-use retail centers and high-end residential design in western North Carolina. Across this wide range of project types, Hutch has been involved in and enjoys every aspect of a design project from writing of initial proposals, contract writing and negotiation, early conceptualization & visioning, schematic design, detailing and watching projects get built. Hutch values the relationships throughout a project, in-house with the design team, with clients as diverse as individual families, the general public, and church committees; but also with the team of contractors and regulatory personnel. This emphasis on the people surrounding a project has served the firm well as we aim to achieve meaningful, sustainable, responsible built work.

Hutch began his career in Alaska as a landscape architect. He has been guiding Kerns Landscape Architecture towards a responsive practice by implementing a design process and providing a high level of detail to each of the firm’s projects. Hutch’s experience in careful project management has provided for the firm a steady growth path, and clients with exceptional design and service.
